Reverse description A winged thunderbolt depicted in the center of the field, rendered with radiating volutes and a central shaft, characteristic of Hellenistic civic bronze coinage of southern Italy. The ethnic legend KAIΛΙ above and ΝꞶΝ below identifies the issuing community of Caelia, inscribed in Greek characters. The flat, unadorned field and dot border frame the composition. The bold, simple design reflects the influence of neighboring Greek colonial mints on Apulian bronze issues of this period.

Additional information

Caelia was a small Peucetian settlement in Apulia — modern Ceglie del Campo, near Bari — that struck its own bronze coinage during a narrow window of the Second Punic War's aftermath, when Rome was consolidating control over southern Italian communities that had variously sided with Hannibal. Caelia had remained loyal to Rome, which likely explains why it retained the privilege of local coinage at all. The uncia denomination, the smallest fractional unit of the as system, would have circulated almost exclusively within the immediate region.
