Vibo Valentia — the Roman colony established in 192 BC on the site of the Greek city Hipponion in Bruttium — began issuing its own bronze coinage almost immediately after its foundation. This uncia belongs to that early colonial series, struck when the city was still consolidating its identity between its Greek past and Roman administrative present. The colony was founded partly to anchor Roman control over a region that had repeatedly shifted allegiances during the Hannibalic War.
