| Obverse description | Central square perforation surrounded by a raised square rim, with four Chinese characters in Regular script (楷书) arranged in cruciform fashion reading clockwise: 咸 (top), 平 (right), 元 (bottom), 寶 (left), forming the legend 咸平元寶 (Xianping Yuanbao). The characters are bold and well-formed, contained within a broad inner rim that separates them from the plain outer field. The flan is notably large and heavy, consistent with the large-size (折二 or larger) denomination, and displays a characteristically deep relief typical of Northern Song casting practice. |
