Obverse description Crowned and draped bust of Władysław IV Vasa facing right, wearing an elaborate jewelled crown surmounted by a cross, with long curled hair and a pointed beard. The king is attired in richly embroidered robes adorned with floral and foliate motifs, befitting his royal dignity. A beaded inner border frames the effigy, while the Latin legend runs continuously around the periphery of the coin: VLAD IIII D G REX POL & SVEC M D L RVS PRVS, identifying the monarch as King of Poland and Sweden, Grand Duke of Lithuania, and ruler of Ruthenia and Prussia. The portrait is rendered in the high Baroque style characteristic of Gdańsk mint engravers of the mid-seventeenth century.
