Stefan Batory's trojak series from Olkusz represents one of the more administratively fraught minting episodes of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Batory had wrested control of the Olkusz mint from a series of unreliable lessees in the 1570s, bringing it under tighter crown supervision precisely because silver from the nearby Olkusz mines was being systematically underweighted by private operators. The reforms coincided almost exactly with this 1579–1580 production window.
Ignicjusz Zagórski's cataloguing separates the two years as distinct types — Ig#O.79 and Ig#O.80 — primarily on the basis of die variation in the mintmaster's mark rather than compositional difference.
