| Obverse description | Bare-headed right-facing bust of King Stanisław August Poniatowski occupying the central field, rendered with fine detail including elaborately curled hair tied at the nape. The surrounding circular legend reads STANIS. AUG. D. G. REX POL. M. D. L., denoting his royal title as King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania. The Trojak of 1766 falls in the early years of Poniatowski's reign, a period when the Polish monetary system was in genuine disarray — debased coinage from the Saxon era had eroded public trust, and the Sejm was still arguing over the scope of reform. The Kraków mint's copper output during this window was substantial but uneven, and examples struck early in the year often show inconsistent planchet preparation characteristic of the transitional production runs before the 1766 monetary ordinance fully took effect.
