Additional information

Sigismund III Vasa came to the Polish-Lithuanian throne in 1587 under disputed circumstances — his election was contested by Maximilian III of Habsburg, who actually invaded Poland before being captured at the Battle of Byczyna in 1588. These Wilno-struck trojaki from 1589–1590 belong to the earliest years of his reign, produced as the Commonwealth was simultaneously absorbing the aftermath of that succession crisis and managing a mint network stretched across two vast constituent states.

The Wilno mint operated under distinct administrative arrangements from its Kraków and Poznań counterparts, which accounts for subtle die-cutting differences collectors use to attribute these pieces to Lithuania specifically.
