Among the earliest coins struck anywhere in the world, these Ionian electrum fractions predate the standardization that came with Lydian royal coinage. The issuing authority remains genuinely unresolved — Weidauer's grouping acknowledges shared fabric and weight standard across several candidate cities without forcing an attribution the evidence cannot support.
The trite denomination, one-third of a stater, was the workhorse fraction of early Ionian commerce. Natural electrum from the Pactolus River region varied unpredictably in its gold-to-silver ratio, meaning two coins of identical weight could differ substantially in intrinsic value — a problem the Lydians would eventually solve by switching to refined monometallic coinage under Croesus.
