Iltirta, identified with modern Lleida in Catalonia, was the principal oppidum of the Ilergetes — the same people whose chieftain Indibilis allied with Hannibal against Rome in 218 BC, then switched sides, then revolted again, dying in battle against Scipio Africanus in 205 BC. These fractional silver pieces were struck squarely within that violent window of shifting allegiances, almost certainly to meet the practical demands of paying troops or provisioning during a period when both Carthaginian and Roman armies moved through Ilergete territory.
The denomination itself — a three-quarter obol equivalent — reflects Iberian adoption of Greek fractional weight standards, most likely transmitted through Emporion (Ampurias) on the northeastern coast.
