Obverse description An eight-pointed star occupies the central field, with small besants or pellets placed between each of its radiating branches. A crescent surmounts the star from below, its horns pointing upward and framing the base of the central device. The legend TRIPOLIS runs along the periphery in Latin characters. The overall design is rendered in a crude but characteristic Crusader hammered style.

Additional information

Raymond III ruled the County of Tripoli through some of the most turbulent decades of the crusader states, ultimately signing a controversial truce with Saladin in 1185 that earned him accusations of treachery among the Latin nobility. The pougeoise type bearing the star and crescent drew directly on Artuqid and Zengid visual conventions — a deliberate commercial pragmatism in a port city whose trade depended as much on Muslim merchants as Christian ones.

The 35-year attribution window reflects genuine scholarly difficulty distinguishing emissions of Raymond II from those of his successor by die evidence alone.
