Obverse description Poseidon depicted in dynamic striding pose to the right, his nude figure rendered with early Classical vigour, right arm raised and brandishing a trident. The god's billowing chlamys streams behind him, adding a sense of movement to the composition. A dotted border encircles the field. The Greek letters VM appear in the right field, representing an abbreviated ethnic or magistrate's mark. The die-work reflects the archaic-to-classical transitional engraving style characteristic of mid-fifth century BC Italiote coinage.
