Obverse description Forepart of a wolf in bold relief, facing right with jaws parted in a bay posture, rendered in a vigorous archaic style characteristic of Argive coinage. The animal's muscular forequarters, pricked ear, and open mouth are well articulated, occupying the majority of the flan. The design is set within a plain circular field with no legend or border. The wolf, the sacred animal of Apollo Lykeios, served as the primary civic emblem of Argos throughout the Classical period.
