Obverse description Helmeted head of Athena facing right, her effigy rendered in fine archaic Greek style with naturalistic hair locks escaping beneath the bowl of an Attic helmet surmounted by a prominent crest and decorated with a wreath motif. The facial features are carefully modelled, with a well-defined nose and chin, and the cheek-guard of the helmet frames the face. Loose curling tresses fall gracefully along the neck below the helmet rim, lending the portrait an animated quality characteristic of the early classical Italiote coinage.
