The design is rendered in a bold, archaic hammered style typical of small feudal coinage of the late 15th to early 16th century. Johann Jakob Trivulzio — condottiere, Marshal of France under Louis XII, and one of the most powerful military figures of his generation — acquired the lordship of Mesocco in 1480 after the Sforza ceded it to settle debts. The trillina was the smallest denomination he issued from this tiny Alpine valley lordship, a copper piece so light it barely registered as coinage. Trivulzio's dual position serving French interests while holding an imperial fief in the Graubünden borderlands made Mesocco a politically anomalous issuing authority for the period.
