Obverse description Ear of barley depicted upright in the field, the central stem flanked by symmetrical rows of grain kernels rendered as raised pellets, characteristic of the iconic civic emblem of Metapontion. The stalk and rachis are rendered with fine engraved detail, conveying the naturalistic yet stylised artistry of the Lucanian mint. The abbreviated ethnic legend ME appears in Greek characters within the field. A border of raised pellets encircles the design.
