正面描述 Laureate head of the emperor Tiberius facing right, rendered in the provincial Greek style with bold, high-relief modelling. The laureate wreath is depicted with prominent leaf tips radiating from the crown. A circular Greek legend surrounds the effigy, reading ΤΙ ΚΑΙ ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΣ Ε ΚΟ ΛΥ, distributed around the field. The flan is characteristically irregular in shape, as typical of Cretan provincial hammered coinage of the Julio-Claudian period.

附加信息

Axos was a minor Cretan city-state whose civic coinage had effectively ceased generations before this piece was struck. The inscription referencing the Roman Senate dates this tridrachm to the reign of Tiberius, placing it within a short window of Cretan civic issues that invoked senatorial authority — an unusual gesture for a Greek community producing silver at this late date, and one that points to a specific local political negotiation rather than routine minting.

Crete's Greek cities retained limited coinage rights under Rome, and issues like this one from Axos appear to reflect individual civic privilege rather than any island-wide monetary arrangement. The RPC corpus lists very few specimens.
