Messene's status as a free city under Roman authority — confirmed by Flamininus in 191 BC and reaffirmed under Augustus — gave the polis the right to strike its own bronze civic coinage well into the imperial period. RPC I 1115A sits within a small group of Messenian issues whose attribution has been revised since the original RPC I print volume; the "A" suffix denotes a type identified through the online supplement rather than the printed corpus.
