Reverse description Upright Heraclean club depicted in the central field, with the ethnic monogram ΜΕ (for Messene) inscribed to the left, all enclosed within or flanked by a wreath. The design is typical of Messenian civic bronze coinage of the early Imperial period, with the club serving as the principal identifying emblem of the city's patron hero.

Additional information

Messene's status as a free city under Roman authority — confirmed by Flamininus in 191 BC and reaffirmed under Augustus — gave the polis the right to strike its own bronze civic coinage well into the imperial period. RPC I 1115A sits within a small group of Messenian issues whose attribution has been revised since the original RPC I print volume; the "A" suffix denotes a type identified through the online supplement rather than the printed corpus.
