Hieron II ruled Syracuse for over half a century as a Roman ally, but his death in 215 BC triggered an immediate political rupture — his grandson Hieronymus abandoned the Roman alliance and opened negotiations with Carthage, just as Hannibal's Italian campaign was reaching its peak after Cannae. This tiny bronze, among the last issues under Hieron's authority, was struck on the eve of that catastrophic reversal.
