| Obverse description | The civic emblem of Chios, a sphinx, is depicted seated to the left in the central field, with its right forepaw raised over a ship's prow — an allusion to Chian maritime power. The creature is rendered in a robust, provincial style typical of Antonine-period Asia Minor bronze coinage. The Greek legend ΑϹϹΑΡΙΑ ΤΡΙΑ, declaring the coin's value of three assaria, is inscribed in the field, serving an unusually prominent denominational function on the obverse. |
