Hybla Megala was one of several Sicilian cities bearing the Hybla name, a source of persistent confusion in ancient numismatics. This particular city, situated in the hinterland southeast of Catana, minted independently during the late third century BC — a period when Rome was consolidating control over Sicily following the First Punic War and most local bronzes were being squeezed out of circulation by Roman-allied issues. That any municipal coinage survived into the 210s here speaks to the administrative looseness of Rome's early Sicilian arrangements.
