Gades — modern Cádiz — held a privileged position among Iberian cities under Augustus, having been granted Roman citizenship decades earlier and maintaining strong commercial ties to Rome through its Atlantic trade networks. This tressis belongs to the city's autonomous bronze coinage struck under the Augustan reorganization of provincial minting, part of a broader effort by Spanish cities to assert local identity within the new imperial framework. Gades was among the wealthiest cities in the western provinces; Strabo ranked it second only to Rome in the number of equestrian-class citizens it produced.
