Witerico seized the Visigothic throne in 603 by murdering his predecessor Liuva II, and his seven-year reign was marked by failed military campaigns against the Byzantines in Spania and persistent political instability. Elvora — modern Évora in Portugal — was one of the western mints active under his rule, and its output is scarce relative to the larger centers at Toledo or Mérida.
