Beschrijving keerzijde Central cross pattée with a globus or knop at its base, rendered in high relief in the characteristic Visigothic manner. The cross is flanked by stylised star-shaped or pellet ornaments in the field. A beaded inner border separates the central device from the surrounding circular Latin legend, the whole struck on an irregular flan typical of Visigothic tremissis coinage.

Aanvullende informatie

Wamba's reign began with a contested election — he reportedly refused the kingship and only accepted after being physically threatened by Visigothic nobles. His brief rule was ended not by war but by a palace coup in 680, when rivals allegedly drugged him into unconsciousness, had him tonsured as a monk, and presented the act as voluntary abdication. Tonsure disqualified him from kingship under Visigothic ecclesiastical law. He never reigned again.

Emerita Augusta (modern Mérida) remained one of the most productive Visigothic minting centers through his reign, and tremisses struck there under Wamba are among the better-documented issues of his coinage.
