Obverse description Facing crowned and bearded bust of Emperor Theophilos in three-quarter view, attired in imperial loros, the pendilia of the crown visible at the sides of the face. The emperor holds a cross potent in his right hand, rendered in the characteristically stylised Sicilian provincial manner. The Greek legend ΘЄOFIΛOS bA (Theophilos, Basileus) is disposed around the periphery of the irregular flan.
