| Reverse description | A prominent cross pattée on steps, a characteristic motif of Visigothic ecclesiastical coinage, occupies the central field of the reverse. The cross rises from a tiered stepped base, symbolising the True Cross, and is rendered in bold relief. The surrounding field is decorated with multiple six-pointed and multi-pointed stars or pellet-stars arranged symmetrically around the central device, filling the field in the typical Visigothic ornamental style. The Latin circumferential legend reads + EMERITA PIVS, identifying the mint of Emerita (modern Mérida) and the royal epithet PIUS. The rim is defined by a beaded border. |
