Obverse description Facing bust of King Recaredo I, rendered in the highly stylized Visigothic manner derived from late Byzantine coinage, depicted helmeted with a crested helmet surmounted by a cross, the face shown frontally with schematic features including large eyes and a prominent nose. The bust is draped and cuirassed, with a lunate collar visible below the chin. The surrounding field is occupied by letters of the retrograde or angular Latin legend distributed around the effigy, bordered by a beaded inner circle and a toothed outer rim.
