Recaredo I's conversion from Arianism to Nicene Christianity in 589 — announced at the Third Council of Toledo — was one of the most consequential religious and political shifts in early medieval Iberia, effectively unifying Visigothic and Hispano-Roman populations under a single orthodoxy. This tremissis was struck at Arofre, a mint whose precise location remains debated among specialists, likely somewhere in the Meseta or the northwest.
Vives 190 is scarce in any condition. The Visigothic tremissis series as a whole suffers from poorly centered flans, and Arofre output is no exception.
