| Obverse description | Diademed and draped male bust facing right, rendered in the debased late antique style characteristic of Merovingian gold coinage. The effigy is encircled by a beaded border, with the moneyer's legend distributed around the periphery of the flan. The die work is bold but stylistically simplified, reflecting the transitional craftsmanship of early seventh-century Frankish minting. |

The Sion mint — operating in what is now the Valais canton of Switzerland — was one of several Alpine mints active under Frankish authority during the early Merovingian period, strategically positioned along transalpine trade routes connecting the Frankish heartland to northern Italy. Mundericus is attested as a moneyer at this mint, his name appearing on a small cluster of related tremisses; the "var." designation against Belfort 4101 suggests a die or legend variant not fully reconciled in the standard corpus.
