The Merovingian tremissis presents one of the most decentralized monetary systems in early medieval Europe — by the late 6th century, minting authority had fragmented so thoroughly that hundreds of independent moneyers operated across Frankish territory, each striking in their own name rather than that of any king. Mariulfus at Brive — almost certainly Brive-la-Gaillarde in the Corrèze — is known from an exceptionally small number of surviving pieces, making Belfort's documentation of this type among the few anchors for attribution.
