| Obverse description | Facing bust of stylized, schematic character occupying the central field, rendered in the debased late antique tradition typical of Merovingian gold coinage. The bust is depicted frontally, with a rounded helmet or diadem-like head covering, flanked by pellets on either side suggesting drapery or shoulder ornaments. The portrait is highly abstracted, reflecting the artistic conventions of early seventh-century Frankish minting. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading the mint name AURELIANIS (Orleans). The flan is irregular and slightly scalloped at the edge, characteristic of hammered Merovingian tremisses. |
