| Obverse description | Pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Justinian I facing right, rendered in the stylized late antique manner characteristic of early Byzantine gold coinage. The emperor wears a pearl diadem with pendilia, a paludamentum fastened at the shoulder, and a cuirass visible at the chest. The portrait is boldly executed in high relief, with the facial features rendered in a frontal-tending three-quarter profile typical of the Constantinopolitan mint. The surrounding circular border frames the imperial effigy, with the obverse legend running along the periphery of the field. |
