Additional information

Benevento's early dukes lacked the authority — or perhaps the ambition — to strike coins in their own names, so they continued issuing tremisses under imperial titulature long after any meaningful Byzantine control over the duchy had lapsed. Constantine IV ruled Constantinople from 668 to 685, but coins bearing his name were struck at Benevento well into the following century, making the regnal attribution on the flan essentially ceremonial fiction by the time of the later issues.

The BMC Vandal reference grouping reflects older cataloguing habits that have since been revised.
