正面描述 Facing bust of Grimoald III, crowned with a jewelled crown and draped, rendered in the stylized Lombard manner. The effigy displays a bearded visage with schematic facial features characteristic of the Beneventan coinage tradition. The bust is shown frontally, with the drapery indicated by diagonal striated lines across the chest. The legend GRIM - VALD, split to either side of the bust, identifies the ruler in abbreviated Latin. The design closely follows late Byzantine prototypes while exhibiting the distinctive local artistic style of the Principality of Benevento.

附加信息

Grimoald III ruled Benevento as a client prince under Frankish overlordship following Charlemagne's campaigns in southern Italy, yet his coinage tells a more complicated story. The tremissis continued to imitate Byzantine types rather than adopting Carolingian monetary conventions — a deliberate assertion of Lombard cultural identity at a moment when Frankish political pressure was intense. Benevento remained the last significant Lombard principality, and its mint choices were anything but accidental.
