Tremissis - Glycerius

Glycerius was elevated to the purple in March 473 by Gundobad, the Burgundian magister militum, without any sanction from the Eastern court in Constantinople — a fact Leo I never accepted. His reign lasted barely fourteen months before the Eastern-backed Nepos landed in Dalmatia and deposed him without a battle, after which Glycerius was blinded and packed off to a bishopric in Salona. The tremissis fraction was the workhorse of late fifth-century imperial gold, and issues under an unrecognized pretender like Glycerius were struck in limited quantity at Mediolanum or Ravenna under circumstances that were, at best, politically provisional.
