| Obverse description | Stylized facing or three-quarter bust of King Erwig in the central field, rendered in the debased Late Antique tradition characteristic of Visigothic coinage, with schematic facial features and rudimentary drapery indicated by incised lines. A cross or cross-pommee appears above the royal effigy, flanked by pellets or small annulets. The surrounding Latin legend reads + I D I N M ERVIGIVS P, identifying the issuing monarch. The flan is irregular and slightly cracked, consistent with the hand-struck hammered technique typical of seventh-century Visigothic tremisses. The overall style reflects the progressive abstraction of Byzantine imperial prototypes as adapted by Iberian workshops. |
