Erwig seized the Visigothic throne in 680 by deposing Wamba — reportedly having him drugged, tonsured as a monk, and then declared unfit to reign under church law. His seven-year rule was defined by accommodation with the Hispano-Roman aristocracy and a series of church councils at Toledo that revised Wamba's military legislation. Córdoba as a mint city for this issue places production in the south, well away from the court at Toledo.
Tremisses of Erwig are scarce across all mints; the CNV and Pliego references remain the two essential frameworks for attributing Visigothic gold, and agreement between them on a single piece is the baseline for confident identification.
