Obverse description Central field occupied by a cross potent with pellets in each angle, struck in high relief in the hammered Carolingian style. The cross is flanked by pellets and set within a plain inner border. The circumferential legend in Latin reads ✠ DOMNS CAROLVS, distributed around the periphery of the flan. The flan is irregular and slightly clipped at one edge, characteristic of eighth-century gold coinage struck at Pavia following the Frankish conquest of the Lombard kingdom.
