Basiliscus seized power in early 475 by forcing Zeno into exile in Isauria, ruling for just under twenty months before Zeno's return and restoration in August 476. That same year, Romulus Augustulus was deposed in the West — meaning coins struck under Basiliscus at Constantinople are contemporaneous with the extinction of the Western emperorship. His usurpation was supported largely by the Theodosian faction at court and by Verina, his own sister and empress dowager, who later turned against him. When Zeno retook the city, Basiliscus and his family were reportedly sent to a waterless cistern in Cappadocia and left to die.
