Agila II is among the most obscure rulers of the terminal Visigothic period, reigning in the northeast — principally Narbonensis and parts of Tarraconensis — while the Arab conquest was dismantling the kingdom in the south. His coinage from Narbona is exceptional precisely because the city held out; it would not fall to the Umayyads until 719, years after Toledo had already collapsed. These tremisses were likely struck under conditions of active political fragmentation, with Agila's authority contested by Ardo, the last recognized Visigothic king.
