Additional information

Lucca was among the most active Lombard minting centers of the early eighth century, producing tremisses under both royal and ducal authority in quantities that suggest a surprisingly vigorous local economy despite the political fragmentation following Liutprand's ongoing campaigns to consolidate Lombard power in Italy. The tremissis itself was inherited wholesale from the late Roman and Byzantine fiscal system — Lombard rulers adopted the denomination precisely because it was already trusted in trade.

MIR 87 places this type within a sequence where die links between Lucchese issues are still being worked out by researchers.
