| Obverse description | Bust of Christ Pantokrator facing, depicted nimbate with a cruciform nimbus, rendered in low relief on the concave field. The figure is shown in frontal presentation wearing imperial robes, with the right hand raised in benediction and the left hand holding the Gospels. The Christogram legend IC XC appears in the field to either side of the bust, in Greek characters. The overall style reflects the Byzantine artistic tradition adapted by the Second Bulgarian Empire. |

At center, a patriarchal or processional cross rises between them. The figure on the left, identified as the Virgin Mary (Theotokos), is shown in imperial robes and crown, while the figure on the right is identified as Tsar Ivan Asen II, wearing military attire and crown. Both figures jointly hold the central cross, conveying the dynastic and religious legitimacy of the Bulgarian ruler.
