Andronikos II came to power determined to reverse the ruinous military spending of his father Michael VIII, disbanding much of the Byzantine fleet within years of taking the throne — a decision that would haunt the empire for decades. The copper trachy of this period reflects a treasury under sustained pressure, funding diplomacy and mercenaries rather than standing armies. The Catalan Company's eventual rampage through Thrace and Macedonia after 1305 was a direct consequence of that policy, though these coins predate that catastrophe by a decade.
