The surrounding circular legend, in Latin, reads *IИ*HOC*SIGИO*VIИCES ('In this sign thou shalt conquer'), a motto of Constantinian origin adopted by the Portuguese Crown. The legend is separated by star-shaped stops and rendered in Gothic characters consistent with hammered silver coinage of João III's reign.
