| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central field occupied by the crowned Portuguese royal shield, displaying the quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross) charged with bezants, and a border of seven castles, all surmounted by a royal crown. The shield is rendered in the late medieval heraldic style typical of Manueline and early Sebastianic coinage. A circular Latin legend runs along the outer rim, reading the king's name and titles. The overall design is characteristic of the hammered silver testons struck for Sebastião I during the first period of his reign. |
