Obverse description Crowned royal shield of Portugal set within a beaded inner circle, flanked at each side by the mint letters 'R' and 'P' positioned beneath a quadrifoil ornament. Due to an engraver's error, the mint letters appear in reversed order — reading 'R-P' rather than the correct 'P-R' for Porto — a diagnostic feature of this variety. The shield displays the characteristic Portuguese quintas arrangement. The entire device is surrounded by a beaded border within the coin's outer rim.
