| Obverse description | Central field occupied by the crowned Portuguese royal shield, displaying the five quinas (inescutcheons) arranged in a cross pattern, each charged with five bezants, and the bordure of seven castles. The crown surmounting the shield is of the open royal type. The mint mark letters P and O flank the shield to left and right respectively. The circumferential legend, rendered in Gothic characters, runs within a beaded inner border and an outer beaded rim, reading the royal titulature of João III. |
