Maria I and her uncle-husband Pedro III ruled jointly from 1777 until Pedro's death in 1786, creating one of the more unusual dynastic arrangements in Portuguese history. The joint reign's coinage was struck under that political necessity rather than convention — Pedro held no independent claim to the throne and would not be styled king in his own right. When he died, Maria's subsequent coins dropped his name entirely, making the joint-reign tostão a relatively compressed type by issue window.
