| Obverse description | The crowned Portuguese royal arms — a shield bearing the quinas (five escutcheons in cross arrangement, each charged with five bezants) — occupies the central field, surmounted by a royal crown with elaborate foliate and floral ornamentation. Flanking the shield at mid-field are two quadrifoil rosettes, with the mint letters 'L' (left) and 'R' (right) positioned beneath them, identifying the Lisbon mint. The entire central device is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, surrounded by a circular Latin legend in Gothic lettering reading IOANES 3 R PORTVGALIE AL DGCN, with pellet stops between words. |
