| Obverse description | The crowned Portuguese royal arms occupy the central field, displaying the quartered shield with the five quinas (escutcheons bearing bezants) and the bordure of castles, all surmounted by an ornate crown. The mint mark letter 'L' (for Lisbon) appears to the left of the shield, flanked by pellets. The peripheral legend in Latin reads PHILIPPVS D G REX PORTVGALIA, separated by a decorative stop, and is contained between an inner beaded circle and an outer beaded border characteristic of hammered coinage of the period. |
