Obverse description Royal coat of arms of Portugal within an ornate crowned shield, centrally positioned in the field. The shield displays the traditional Portuguese quinas (five escutcheons in cross arrangement) with castles on the bordure, surmounted by a royal crown. The mint mark letters Λ (above) and I (below) flank the shield at left and right respectively. A beaded inner circle frames the central device, with a circular Latin legend running along the outer periphery.
